Description
Embedded Software Engineer
Piersight is building software for satellite systems, focused on making spacecraft more capable, reliable, and responsive in orbit. As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will work on the flight software running on a satellite’s onboard computer—the software that interprets commands from the ground station, coordinates spacecraft subsystems, and reports health and faults back to Earth.
What you’ll do
- Develop and maintain embedded flight software in C using the F Prime (F´) framework.
- Process commands received through the ground station and route them to the appropriate spacecraft subsystems.
- Implement health checks and telemetry for satellite components, including temperature monitoring and subsystem status.
- Trigger protective actions, such as heater control, when monitored values cross defined thresholds.
- Detect, report, and help diagnose subsystem faults through telemetry sent back to the ground station.
- Design efficient algorithms and memory-conscious software for a resource-constrained onboard computer with approximately 4 MB of RAM.
- Reason about subsystem interactions, state transitions, failure modes, and reliable command handling.
What we look for
- 2–5 years of experience in embedded software development.
- Strong C/C++ programming fundamentals.
- Experience with, or the ability to work effectively in, the F Prime (F´) framework.
- Strong algorithmic thinking and clear reasoning about states, failures, and subsystem interactions.
- Solid foundations in physics and mathematics.
- Comfort developing software within tight memory and resource constraints.
- Interest in spacecraft, avionics, real-time systems, or other safety- and reliability-critical embedded systems.
Why this role
- Work on software that directly operates and monitors spacecraft hardware.
- Solve systems problems where correctness, efficiency, and reliability matter.
- Contribute across command handling, subsystem control, health monitoring, and fault reporting in a resource-constrained environment.
