The older I get, the more I understand that all the good things in my career have happened because of people - someone somewhere wanted me to win and felt like they'd won when I won. For this I will be eternally grateful to the Ruby community, where I found my gang, and built the friendships that have guided my career.
Wherever you are in your career, find your gang. And gangs don't come together over nothing. You have to have some bigger thing in mind - whether it's music for a band, or a programming language for its fanatics - it is this shared service to some bigger goal that makes the gang interesting and helps the gang endure. Do things for your gang members. Help them find jobs. Teach them. Have them teach you. Without calculation or seeking transactional paybacks. Later, the goodwill of people is more valuable than any monies y'all might exchange.
Perhaps the real treasure is the friends we made along the way.
